THE
SIGN OF "PEACE AND SAFETY"
Many Christians are familiar with this passage written by the Apostle Paul: "But
of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write
unto you. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so
cometh as a thief in the night. For when they shall say, Peace and
safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a
woman with child; and they shall not escape. But ye, brethren, are not
in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief." (1
Thessalonians 5:1-3)
Since Israel will not be destroyed in the end time, I had always applied this passage to the nations of the world, who will witness sudden destruction in the form of a nuclear holocaust. However, Paul used a term that suggests Israel is the subject of his prophecy. The phrase "travail as a woman with child" is a familiar expression found in the writing of the prophets and various Jewish texts. It is used for the sufferings Israel will endure during the time called "Jacob's Trouble," which is the Great Tribulation: "For
thus saith the LORD; We have heard a voice of trembling, of fear, and
not of peace. Ask ye now, and see whether a man doth travail with
child? wherefore do I see every man with his hands on his loins, as a
woman in travail, and all faces are turned into paleness? Alas! for
that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of
Jacob's trouble; but he shall be saved out of it." (Jeremiah 30:5-7)
Since Paul wrote that "sudden destruction" will come upon them as "travail upon a woman with child," it is likely a connection was being made to Israel. We know however, that Israel will not be destroyed in the last days, and that lasting peace will not come to Israel until the Messiah returns. The Greek language illuminates the meaning of this passage. The word "peace" comes from "asphaleia" which means "stability" or "security." The word "sudden" comes from "aiphnidios," which can mean "unforeseen" or "unexpected," and the word "destruction" comes from "olethros," which means "ruin" or "death." This prophecy teaches that while Israel says “Peace and security,” unforeseen death and ruin will follow. Now consider for a moment our recent history. In the name of "Peace and Security" Israel has recently proposed an arbitrary withdraw from the majority of the West Bank: "JERUSALEM (AP) -- Lawmakers
approved a new Israeli government Thursday that pledges to draw the
nation's border and withdraw from large parts of the West Bank within
four years. Parliament voted confidence in Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's
coalition government by a 65-49 majority. The 25 Cabinet ministers were
being sworn in as the new government took power. Olmert's plan, which
would leave Israel with three main blocs of Jewish settlements in the
West Bank, is to be carried out unilaterally if the Hamas-led
Palestinian Cabinet refuses to recognize Israel, accept past peace
agreements and renounce violence -- conditions Israel has set for
talking to the militant Islamic group." (“New Israeli Gov't Plans West
Bank Withdrawal” WCBS News Radio, Posted: Thursday, 04 May 2006 1:53PM)
Three of the past Israeli Prime ministers have proposed a withdrawal plan in the name of peace and security, despite the fact that their enemies continue to attack them, or propose their destruction. Of course, "unexpected death" will come upon Israel during the Great Tribulation. According to Zechariah, two thirds of Jews will be killed at this time: "And
it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the LORD, two parts
therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.
And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them
as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall
call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and
they shall say, The LORD is my God." (Zechariah 12:8-9)
The current peace plan could be the cry of "peace and safety" in Paul’s prophecy. According to the Bible, this peace plan will not work. The Bible predicts that a multinational army will come against the Jewish State, and force them from half of Jerusalem and ancient Judea (called the West Bank today.) This attack will kill countless Jews, bringing about the “abomination of desolation” on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. Next Page: The Fortunes Restored to Elam
