SIGNS OF THE END TIME IN 1 TIMOTHY

CONSIDER: In his letter to Timothy, the Apostle Paul made this prediction:

1 TIMOTHY 4:1-3

1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth

In this Scripture, there are several unique descriptions of our generation:

1.“Departing” from the faith. The Greek word translated “depart” comes from the word “aphistemi” which means “to stand off.” It does not describe people leaving the faith (although many will fall into apostasy in the end time,) but rather a stubborn resistance to the things of God. In the Hebrew-Greek Key Study Bible we read:

"...in Hebrews 3:12, from the living God. This latter expression does not mean that they once belonged to God, but now no longer belong to Him, but rather that they stood away from God, never having belonged to him. The same is true in 1 Timothy 4:1 in which the word is translated as “depart” (Hebrew Greek Key Study Bible, by Spiros Zodhaites, page 1672, number 868)

Throughout human history, the majority of people had respect for the things of God, even if they were not religious. Many were superstitiously afraid of offending God, or even the “gods” of others. A reverence to faith, even among most unbelievers, was universally present until the 1960's. Since that time, the number of people who mock faith in a personal God has increased exponentially. Time Magazine once declared that “God is dead.”
Our generation has witnessed many resist or “stand away” from God. According to Paul, this is a sign of the end time.

2. Giving heed to seducing spirits. The word "seducing" comes from the Greek word “planos” which means: “wandering or roving.” “Wandering" is a term Jude used for false teachers who were being influenced by demonic forces:

JUDE 1:3-4

3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

    We are saved by grace through faith. But Jude warns that the people of the end time will turn grace into lasciviousness. This is the doctrine of “Hyper-grace.” The word “lasciviousness” comes from the Greek word “aselgeia”, which means “wanton lust.” The people described in this passage used the grace of God as an excuse to follow their own lustful desires. They were deceived into thinking that God's grace is merely a “covering” for their sins. If they commit adultery, they believe the grace will cover them in their adultery. If they lie, cheat, or seal, they believe God’s grace covers them. No matter what they do, they are deceived into thinking they are covered by the grace of God. The Bible on the other hand, says faith is a requirement for grace.
In the book of Ephesians, we read:

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:  Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)

    Nowhere in the Bible does it say that we are “saved by Grace alone.” Instead, the Bible teaches that we are saved by “Grace through faith.” In the Bible “faith” does not mean “to believe in God,” but “to trust in God.” If we “trust in God,” we will do our best to follow His Word. This does not mean we can be perfect, but that we are always to strive for perfection. Part of true faith is also humility before God. In the book of James, we  read:

“Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:4-7)
