CONSIDER:
According to Biblical prophecy, a controversy over the
city of Jerusalem will occur prior to the coming of the LORD to the
earth. Every nation in the world will entangle themselves in this
controversy, leading to their destruction. ZECHARIAH
CHAPTER 12
According to Zechariah, Jerusalem will become a “burdensome stone” to the entire world in the end time. Of course, the world community has tried to solve the issue of Jerusalem for the past 50 years. ZECHARIAH
12:3-4
2 Behold, I will make
Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they
shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.
3 And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it. Jerusalem will become a “burdensome stone” for “all people” in the time when “all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.” All nations will gather against Jerusalem in both the middle and end of the Great Tribulation. A “burdensome stone” is a rock that cannot be easily moved. It is used as a figure of speech for a major problem or a stalemate. This is exactly how the dispute over Jerusalem can be described today. Since both Israel and Islam consider this city to be central to their faith, Jerusalem appears to be an impossible issue to resolve. This nations of the world will send an army against Jerusalem, attempting to "move this stone." They will drive Israel from half of Jerusalem for three and a half years. After this, Israel will reclaim their holy city through a military conflict, and the nations of the world will attempt to divide the city again. We are currently witnessing the nations of the world (under the banner of the United Nations) attempting to solve this dispute. For almost 2000 years, Israel did not possess this city, therefore a dispute specifically over this city did not exist. ISAIAH
CHAPTER 34
Isaiah predicted that there would be a “controversy” over Zion when “the LORD’s vengeance” comes upon all nations. We read: ISAIAH
34:1-8
1 Come near, ye nations, to
hear; and hearken, ye people: let the earth hear, and all that is
therein; the world, and all things that come forth of it.
2 For the indignation of the LORD is upon all nations, and his fury upon all their armies: he hath utterly destroyed them, he hath delivered them to the slaughter. 3 Their slain also shall be cast out, and their stink shall come up out of their carcases, and the mountains shall be melted with their blood. 4 And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree. 5 For my sword shall be bathed in heaven: behold, it shall come down upon Idumea, and upon the people of my curse, to judgment. 6 The sword of the LORD is filled with blood, it is made fat with fatness, and with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams: for the LORD hath a sacrifice in Bozrah, and a great slaughter in the land of Idumea. 7 And the unicorns (great aurochs or wild bulls—now extinct) shall come down with them, and the bullocks with the bulls; and their land shall be soaked with blood, and their dust made fat with fatness. 8 FOR IT IS THE DAY OF THE LORD'S VENGEANCE, and the year of recompences FOR THE CONTROVERSY OF ZION The first verse reveals the context of this prophecy. It will be fulfilled when “the indignation of the LORD is upon all nations.” This is the judgment of the Great Tribulation. Isaiah specifically tells us that God will come to the earth to pay back the nations of the world for “the controversy of Zion.” “Zion” was the ancient name of the city of Jerusalem. The word “controversy” comes from the Hebrew word “riyb”, which means “a strife or a dispute.” The prophet foresaw that a dispute over Jerusalem will occur during the time of the Judgment Day of God. Certainly, Jews and Arabs have fought over the land of Israel for centuries. However, the specific dispute over Jerusalem has only occurred during the past 50 years. Only almost a weekly basis, we watch news reports about the dispute over Zion. Since we are witnessing this today, can the coming of the Lord be far behind? ISAIAH
CHAPTER 31
Isaiah also predicted that God will come and fight specifically for the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. This perfectly matches current history, because this hill is at the center of the Arab-Israeli conflict. ISAIAH
31:4-5
4 For thus hath the LORD
spoken unto me, Like as the lion and the young lion roaring on his
prey, when a multitude of shepherds is called forth against him, he
will not be afraid of their voice, nor abase himself for the noise of
them: so shall THE LORD OF HOSTS COME DOWN TO FIGHT FOR MOUNT ZION, AND
FOR THE HILL THEREOF.
5 As birds flying, so will the LORD of hosts defend Jerusalem; defending also he will deliver it; and passing over he will preserve it. In this prophecy, God returns to the earth specifically to fight for the hill in Jerusalem. Of course, this is the Temple Mount. Before the the Dome of the Rock, and the Al Aqsa Mosque were constructed on this site (in the 8th century), this hill was not central to the centuries long conflict between Jews and Arabs. Ownership of the land has always been disputed, but not the “hill” of Jerusalem—until the followers of Muhammad constructed Muslim shrines on this site. When God returns to the earth, the Bible records birds coming to feed the flesh of the armies of the world (Revelation 19). This is most likely what is meant when we read that God will come “as the birds flying.” If not, this figuratively describes the Messiah coming in the clouds with His saints. In any case, the same hill that is disputed today is what God will fight over in Isaiah's prophecy. An army composed of all nations will divide Jerusalem (Zechariah 14:1-2; Revelation 11:1-2). Three and a half years later, 144,000 Jewish converts will expel this army from the city (Revelation 14:1). They will hold a prayer meeting, and call for the Messiah to come (Joel 2). The armies of the world will surround Jerusalem (Zechariah 12,14), and after this, the Lord will return, and fight for his chosen people. Next Page: Knowledge Increased
