JERUSALEM DIVIDED (PART 1)

CONSIDER: Since 1970, the United Nations has wanted Israel to divide Jerusalem, giving East Jerusalem (including the Temple Mount) to the Palestinians. An unfulfilled prophecy (written in 2,400 years ago) predicts that a multinational force will divide the city of Jerusalem. Is this merely a coincidence?

ZECHARIAH 14:1-2

1 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.
2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.

A comparison of this prophecy to recent times is uncanny:

º Zechariah wrote that the city of Jerusalem will become a “spoil” for the Jews. We read—“...thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee. For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem…”

According to Zechariah, Jerusalem would be a “spoil” of the Jews when it is divided. A “spoil” is something taken in the aftermath of a war. This precisely matches recent history. The Jews did not possess the entire city of Jerusalem for almost 2,000 years until 1967—when they took the city as a spoil of the Six Day War.

º A multinational army will divide Jerusalem. Zechariah wrote—“...thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee. For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem...”

Jerusalem was never a divided city until the twentieth century, after Israel declared its independence in 1947. After this, Jordan possessed East Jerusalem, and the Israelis possessed West Jerusalem. After the Six Day War of 1967 however, the Israelis reclaimed the entire city for the first time in almost 2,000 years. After this recent historic event, it has been the position of the United Nations for a re-division of the city. East Jerusalem would be the capital of a Palestinian state, but Jews refuse to give up any part of their holy city.
Consider the language of Zechariah's prophecy and compare it to this article from the Jerusalem Post:

“The city can, of course, be divided again. Presumably, this is what the Palestinians hope will eventually happen, giving them control of the city that was once under Jordanian occupation between 1948 and 1967. But such a solution would be unacceptable to a vast majority of Israelis.” Negotiations over Jerusalem., Jerusalem Post, 12/08/1995
